Frequently Asked Questions About Invisalign, Answered!

Aligners in case surrounded by multiple other clear alignersWith more than 12 million patients around the globe, Invisalign is one of the most popular orthodontic treatments on the market. As a result, you likely already know quite a bit about it before your first aligner arrives, starting with the fact that the trays are see-through. However, if you want to learn more about life with clear aligners, you’ll be happy to know that you’re in the right place! Below, you’ll find the answers to frequently asked questions about Invisalign.

1. Does Invisalign Hurt?

Many patients are worried that Invisalign will hurt. However, it’s one of the most comfortable orthodontic treatments since there aren’t any brackets or wires! Plus, you can sip on cool water, stick to soft foods, and take OTC pain medication if any discomfort does arise, which is usually in the hours following the transition to a new aligner.

2. How Long Do I Have to Wear the Aligners Each Day?

To move your teeth into their properly aligned positions, your trays need to be on as much as possible. The general guideline is 20-22 hours a day. In order to meet this goal, you should really only remove them to eat and complete your oral hygiene regimen.

Note: If you have trouble remembering to put your aligners back in, try setting a reminder on your phone!

3. Do I Have to Avoid Certain Foods with Invisalign?

Although there aren’t any dietary restrictions, there are certainly some foods you should keep to a minimum. Sugary treats are a great example since consuming them in excess can cause cavities to develop and, in turn, bring your teeth-straightening journey to a temporary stop. It’s also a good idea to exercise caution with crunchy foods, like raw nuts, since they can cause an attachment to come loose.

4. Can I Still Drink Coffee?

Yes, as long as you remove your aligners first! To meet the 20-22 hour-a-day wear-time goal, try enjoying this caffeinated beverage alongside your breakfast or lunch. And, of course, make sure to thoroughly brush your teeth and clean your trays shortly after.

5. What Happens If I Break One of My Aligners?

If one of your aligners breaks, you should not try to glue it back together or simply move onto the next tray in the series. Instead, you should contact your dentist ASAP. Once they have a better understanding of the severity of the damage and where you are in your treatment plan, they can determine what the next best step is.
