Dealing With a Dental Emergency on Summer Vacation

Picture this. Summer is here, school’s out, and its finally time for that much-anticipated family vacation. Everything is going fine, and you’re enjoying the local cuisine when your filling falls out. Now what? You’re not at home so you can’t rush over to your regular dentist, and you may have language barriers preventing you from finding local emergency care. Don’t despair. While hopefully this scenario never comes true, here’s what you should do if a dental emergency happens when you’re out of town.

If You Are Traveling Domestically or Speak the Local Language

If you are still in the United States or understand the language, you are at a major advantage if you need emergency care. Domestically, check online or ask a local resident to help recommend a dentist. You can also ask the concierge at your hotel or check review sites on your phone.

If You Are Traveling Abroad

It is especially important to be prepared for any type of emergency, especially if you are travelling abroad or do not understand the local language. Thus, it is important to travel with a list of emergency contact numbers, including the number of the local consulate or US Embassy. These agencies can provide referrals or help you locate a dental practice in your area.

How To Prevent Dental Emergencies

The good news is that while you cannot prevent every type of dental emergency, there are still steps you can take to reduce your risk of having one while you are away:

  • Schedule your semi-annual dental exam before leaving for vacation. This way, if there are any loose fillings, cavities, or other oral health problems, your dentist can treat them before you go.
  • Don’t forget to pack your oral hygiene equipment, including toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, and any oral appliances and soaks or cleansers if needed.
  • Don’t take a break from protecting your teeth. Wear your bite guard, sports guard, or retainer as directed by your dentist.
  • Don’t drink the local water; instead drink and brush your teeth with bottled water, and don’t open your mouth while swimming or showering.
  • Don’t indulge in treats that could damage your real or prosthetic teeth, such as very crunchy or sticky foods.

When In Doubt…

If you are facing a dental emergency and are still not sure what to do or where to go, visit the local emergency room for help. If they cannot treat you, they can likely help you find someone who can.

Remember, vacations are supposed to be fun, not stressful. If you’re heading away for some fun this summer, take the proper precautions to safeguard your oral health from emergency situations and you’ll have plenty to smile about!
